Guy Sonnen – actor, singer

Guy Sonnen (Maastricht, 1952) is a Dutch actor, singer and theater producer.

Guy Sonnen had his theater training at the Studio Herman Teirlinck in Antwerp and the Center d’Etudes Theatrales in Leuven and undertook his vocal studies with Carolyn Watkinson, Paula Salomon-Lindberg, Ernst Boreel, Valentin Soukhodolets, Ale van Dijk and Henk Smit.

After wanderings and a European tour with Bread and Puppet Jerusalem, he settled in Amsterdam in 1974, where he was part of the theater collective Sater for several years. As an actor / singer he played with Toneelgroep Globe, Persona, De Roeiers, Mickery, de Kern, Stichting Maat, DNA, Nationale Reisopera and Het Zuidelijk Toneel. He also played in musicals, including the visual music theater piece “Regen” (1991) by Studio Hinderik.

In 1975 Sonnen founded the Muziektheatergroep Kip. With this group he devised and played ten ‘street operas’. During this period he met puppeteer Feike Boschma. They became friends and have been working together regularly ever since.

He brought theater and his love for music together in 1992 in the theater solo “De Contrabas” by Patrick Süsskind, which he played for two years.

Since the nineties Guy Sonnen has been involved in theater and music initiatives in Belgium, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Moldavia, Romania, Suriname, South Africa and Sweden, both as a writer / theater producer and as a teacher of LABAN Movement Techniques.

In 2004 he directed the one-act play “Equal Cases?”, Written by Gerardjan Rijnders and together with Boschma he created the opera performance “Mozart en Salieri” for the Gergiev Festival in Rotterdam.

In addition, since 2005, he has participated in performances by the Russian Chamber Choir, where he sings along as bass and recites Russian poems.

On Sunday 27 September 2015 Guy Sonnen performed with the Trio Belfontis in “Waterloo, Drumroll and Cannon Fire at Castle Heeswijk”

Geelvinck Fortepiano Festival 2015:

On October 15 Guy Sonnen performed with the Trio Belfontis in “Waterloo: Drumroll and Cannonfire at Geelvinck”.
