Samuel Shephard – cello

Samuel Shepherd (1989) begon op tienjarige leeftijd met cello spelen. Hij werd in 2001 toegelaten aan het prestigieuze Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester, waar hij studeerde bij David Smith. Sam vervolgde zijn studie bij Peter Dixon aan het Royal Northern College of Music nadat hij het Music at Beaulieu Award in 2007 en de William Warburton studiebeurs in 2008 had gewonnen. In 2011 werd Sam aan het Conservatorium van Amsterdam toegelaten, waar hij les kreeg van Floris Mijnders en Daniël Esser. Het jaar daarop werd hij toegelaten aan de Nederlands Philharmonisch Orkest Academie, waardoor hij regelmatig optrad met het orkest in het concertseizoen 2012-2013. Ook is Sam regelmatig te vinden bij festivals zoals het Festival Classique, de Uitmarkt en het Amsterdamse Cello Biënnale. Hij heeft masterclasses gevolgd bij o.a. Anner Bylsma, Pavel Fischer, Petr Prause, Steven Doane, Ralph Kirshbaum, Karine Georgian en Gary Hoffman.

 

Samuel Shepherd (1989, London, United Kingdom) began playing the cello at the age of ten. In 2001 Sam enrolled at the prestigious Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester, where he studied with David Smith. Sam won the Music at Beaulieu Award first prize in 2007 and the following year he was awarded the William Warburton scholarship, which allowed him to continue his studies with Peter Dixon (principle cellist of the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra) at the Royal Northern College of Music. In 2011 Sam enrolled at the Conservatory of Amsterdam, where he continued his studies with Floris Mijnders and Daniël Esser, as well as receiving regular tuition from legendary Dutch cellist Anner Bylsma. The following year he got accepted to the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra Academy, which allowed him to work with the orchestra throughout the 2012-2013 concert season. Sam has recently performed at prestigious events, such as the Festival Classique (The Hague), the Uitmarkt Festival and the Amsterdam Cello Biënnale. He has received masterclasses from Pavel Fischer, Petr Prause, Steven Doane, Ralph Kirshbaum, Karine Georgian and Gary Hoffman. As a chamber musician Sam regularly performs with the Intercontinental Ensemble and as part of the Shepherd & Belarte Duo. Sam made his debut recital at the Kleine Zaal of the Concertgebouw in September 2013.
