13:00  Introduction and Words of Welcome

13:15-13:45: Music from the Middle East – Talal Fayad oud, Rebal Korkmaz percussion 

Classical and folk music by Talal Fayad, a composer from Syria who plays Turkish and Arabic music on the oud. He has played in various festivals including the Amsterdam Grachten Festival. He will be accompanied by percussionist Rebal Korkmaz; both musicians are currently studying at Rotterdam Conservatory (Codarts). 

13:45-15:00 The Mode the Greeks Forgot and the Story of a Song – Robert Cirillo

Years ago, Robert Cirillo heard a song with a Greek title, Spanish lyrics, and a melody that sounded Middle Eastern. Investigating the origin and history of the song, he discovered how limited the Ancient Greeks and Medieval European musicologists were in their view of musical modes. Robert will summarise the results of his research.

15:30-16:00 Bashkir music and dance traditions – Irek Baischew

Irek Baischew was born and raised in Bashkortostan, a steppe and mountainous region in Central Asia at the foot of the Urals. When he came to live in Leipzig, he kept up his passion for Bashkir traditions, especially music, dance, horse riding and archery. He recently commemorated the Bashkir troops, who crossed the river IJssel at the Dutch villages of Wijhe and Veessen in November 1813, with a Bashkir cultural festival in Veessen.

16:00-16:30 Kuray as an acoustic synthesizer – German Popov

For a long time German Popov has been exploring the various musical traditions of Eurasia. Part of his research revolves around the concept of “acoustic synthesizer”- referring to the ability of archaic musical instruments to produce a wide range of sounds and tonal qualities. He will shed light on the technique of playing the Bashkir kuray and its relatives among similar flutes in the Ural and Central Asia region.

16:30-17:00 The music of Argentinian Tango – Leo Vervelde 

Leo Vervelde, who plays bandoneon, studied at the Conservatoire Edgar Varese in Paris with maestro Juan Mosalini. In 1993 he started the Argentinian tango department at Codarts with Carel Kraaijenhof. From 2002 to 2014 Leo Vervelde was head of world music at Codarts. He will talk about the history of this music genre and its development.

17:00-18:00 The notion of beauty among the Xingu Indians (Brazil) – Patrick Berben

An introduction to the material and spiritual culture of the Xingu Indians as can be seen in their rites, designs, myths, dances and music. He will talk about the shaman who takes care of the village’s relationship with the world of spirits, their use of rattles to communicate with them and the reversal of the male / female role pattern in dances and rites.
