Historical Improvisation – the next Generation A new generation of thinkers and musical talents are leading the charge in reviving the practice of improvisation on historical instruments and in historical styles. Nathan Mondry, composer and improviser, studied historical improvisation at the Schola Cantorum in Basel, and is a key specialist in this field. He is currently a doctoral student at Cornell University. He will be joined by Suren Barry, who wrote his doctoral thesis on Mozart Cadenza improvisation at McGill University and continues to explore historical improvisation practice as a current student at the Juilliard School. Suren is also teaching assistant for Yiheng Yang, for her courses on improvisation at the Juilliard School’s historical performance department. The Salon will explore themes such as reinvigorating the performance and interpretation of Baroque, Classical, and Romantic music repertoire through improvisation, sharing of learning tools, and have plenty of live performances and improv on historical keyboards.
