Fortepiano in Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ – 20 november

Het Young Pianists Festival, dat tussen 12 en 22 november plaats vindt in het Muziekgebouw en het Bimhuis, plaatst vrijdag 20 november de spotlichten op de fortepiano, met een symposium en recitals. Tussen 15.30 en 17.45 vindt een afwisselend programma plaats met voordrachten en recitals met specialisten als Christo Lelie, Sietse Kok en Birgitta Arts. Keiko Shichijo speelt Beethoven’s Eroica’s Variaties en de Waldstein Sonate op een originele ‘Frère et Soeur Stein’ fortepiano uit 1802, misschien wel door Beethoven bespeeld …  Ook Natalia Lentas, 1ste prijswinnares van het Geelvinck Fortepiano Festival 2015, kiest Beethoven voor haar recital vanmiddag.

Een familebedrijf ‘Frère et Soeur Stein’

After their father, the famous instrument builder Johann Andreas Stein, died in 1792, Nannette and Matthäus Andreas Stein continued to operate the family workshop in Augsburg . J.A. Stein was an important organ builder, who started building pianofortes from around 1750. He designed several combination instruments like a vis-à-vis keyboard instrument and a polytonichlavicord. He is also said to have developed the Prellzungen mechanic.

Having obtained the Imperial Privilege to set up as an instrument builder in Vienna, Nannette Stein moved from Augsburg with her husband Andreas Streicher and two of her younger brothers, Matthaüs Andreas and Andreas Friedrich. The firm Geschwister Stein was established in Vienna in 1794. Nannette and Matthäus Andreas Stein worked together and rapidly gained great respect as instrument makers. They produced pianofortes with the nameplate inscription Frère et Soeur Stein d’Augsbourg à Vienne until approximately mid-1802.

In 1802 a family dispute led to the dissolution of the Geschwister Stein firm. From approximately October 1802, Matthäus Andreas built pianofortes under his own name, signing them ‘André Stein’. Nannette pursued her path in the instrument making business with her husband Andreas Streicher. She acquired great fame making pianofortes under the name Nannette Streicher née Stein.

For over a century the Stein and Streicher families shared their excellence in piano building with the greatest names in music history. Their role in the evolution of the pianoforte and the development of its sound was of great significance.
