Josefien Stoppelenburg - Sopraan

Josefien Stoppelenburg verleende solistische medewerking aan talloze oratoriumuitvoeringen in Nederland, Duitsland en in de Verenigde Staten, waar ze momenteel woont (Chicago).

Samen met haar zus Charlotte vormt ze een vocaal duo en de zussen waren als zodanig de eerste vocalisten die het Prinses Christina Concours wonnen. Televisieoptredens maakten hun uitvoering van het Bloemenduet van Delibes (uit de opera Lakmé) nationaal bekend.

Met regelmaat is ze te gast binnen het kamermuziek en oratoriumcircuit in Nederland en Duitsland, vaak met het ensemble Brothers and Sisters, waar het pianoduo Martijn en Stefan Blaak deel van uit maakt (www.brotherssisters.nl).

Josefien werd in de Amerikaanse pers geprezen om haar ‘impressive agility’, ‘dramatic interpretation’ en ‘astonishing singing’. In 2021 bracht het prestigieuze CD label Navona Records haar haar nieuwe CD ” Modern Muses, Contemporary Treasures for Soprano and Cello’ uit. Modern Muses won in 2022 een Bronze Medal in The Global Music Awards.

Josefien had al eerder een tweede prijs in The American Prize Opera Competition gewonnen, alsmede de Chicago Oratorio Award. Ze is regelmatig gastdocente aan Amerikaanse conservatoria.

Dit seizoen 2022 soleert Stoppelenburg o.a. met het Cincinnati Bach Ensemble St Thomas, Arizona Bach Festival, Baroque Music Festival Corona Del Mar California, Dayton Bach Society, treedt ze op in de Dominicaanse Republiek en is de 2022 Artist-in Residence by het Boulder Bach Festival in Colorado.

Haar live concert op WFMT (de ‘Radio 4’ van Chicago) werd verkozen als één van de toptienconcerten van het jaar.

Josefien is tevens schilderes. Haar kleurrijke werk werd gebruikt in opera producties en in CD boekjes, als kunstkaarten en in mode artikelen, en ze schildert regelmatig in opdracht. Momenteel legt ze de laatse hand aan het illustreren van een kinderboek, geschreven door haar zus Charlotte.

Dutch soprano Josefien Stoppelenburg is best known for her dazzling vocal agility and her passionate and insightful interpretations. Stoppelenburg is currently performing all over the United States as a specialist of Baroque Music. and as a concert singer. Concerts this season include performances with the Rockford Symphony Orchestra, Newberry Consort, Baroque Music Festival Corona del Mar, Arizona Bach Festival, St Louis Bach Society, Rembrandt Chamber Musicians, Boulder Bach Festival, Champaign Urbana Symphony Orchestra, Cincinnati Bach Ensemble,Peoria Symphony Orchestra, Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra, Apollo Chorus of Chicago, the Peoria Bach Festival, and with Camerata Amsterdam (Netherlands).

Stoppelenburg performed as a soloist in Europe,The United States, Asia, South America, and the Arab Emirates.

Her appearance on Chicago’s classical radio program“Live from WFMT” was selected as one of the 10 best performances in 2016 and she has become one of the most sought after Baroque singers in the Chicago area.

She won the Chicago Oratorio Award and second prize in The American Prize Opera Competition.

Josefien gave vocal masterclasses about Baroque Music at Indiana University, (Jacobs School of Music) University of Colorado and Illinois State University.

From 2005 until 2007, Josefien was part of the Young Opera Ensemble of Cologne, Germany. Leading operatic roles have included Aci in the Haymarket Opera Company’s acclaimed production of Handel’s Aci, Galatea e Polifemo and Tirsi in Clori, Tirsi e Fileno, and Poulenc’s La Voix Humaine in the International Chamber Opera Festival (The Netherlands). She has appeared with Camerata Amsterdam, Dutch Radio Philharmonic Orkest, Noord Nederlands Orkest, Haymarket Opera Company, Baroque Artists of Champaign Urbana, Fulcrum Point and Music of the Baroque, Bloomington Bach Cantata Project and the Fort Wayne Philharmonic Orchestra.

Ensemble Brothers and Sisters (vocal duo Charlotte and Josefien Stoppelenburg and piano duo Martijn and Stefan Blaak) recently appeared live on Radio 4, the Dutch classical radio station for Classical Music and just made their ensemble debut in the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. As a vocal duo, Charlotte and Josefien have performed in nearly every concert hall in The Netherlands.

Many composers wrote especially for Josefien. She performed works by Jacob TV, Esa-Pekka Salonen , Stacy Garrop, Lita Grier, Eric Whitacre and William Neil, as well as works by Dutch composers, including her father, composer Willem Stoppelenburg.
