Bassist Joris Teepe was hier al vaak te horen, telkens met een andere muzikale partner. (pianist Rob van Bavel, drummer Gene Jackson, pianist Theo Hill)
Vanavond komt hij samen met gitarist Saul Rubin, waarmee hij al jaren in verschillende bezettingen maar ook als duo samenspeelt.
Saul Rubin werkte onder anderen nauw samen met musici als Sonny Rollins, Roy Hargrove, Hank Jones, en vele vele andere grote namen uit de jazz, en nu live te horen gewoon tussen de vleugels van Huis Midwoud!

Saul Rubin

is a New York–based jazz guitarist, composer, multi-instrumentalist,
bandleader, producer, visual artist, and mentor whose career spans more than four
decades of performance, recording, and community leadership. A mainstay of the city’s jazz life, he occupies a distinctive place as both a deeply musical guitarist and asustaining force within the broader jazz ecosystem.

A regular member of the Roy Hargrove Big Band, Rubin has worked with artists across generations including Sonny Rollins, Roy Hargrove, Kirk Lightsey, Sullivan Fortner,Victor Lewis, Jon Batiste, Bob Cranshaw, Gregory Porter, Renée Fleming, John Hicks, Johnny O’Neal, Hank Jones, Frank Wess, Candido, Winard Harper, Larry Willis, Sherman Irby, Thomas Chapin, Emmet Cohen and countless others.

Born in Manhattan in 1958 and raised in Brooklyn and Great Neck, Long Island, Rubin developed into a gifted guitarist and composer shaped by rock, blues, fusion and classical music. From 1976 – 1980 he studied composition and jazz at the Hartt School of Music, with Jackie McLean and Paul Jeffrey. In 1980 Saul returned to New York to
embark on his musical journey.
A major turning point came with his long-term association with the Roy Hargrove Big Band, which he toured internationally and appeared on Emergence (2009). He later joined Sonny Rollins
’ touring band at Rollins’ invitation, participating in Rollins
’ final U.S. and European tours, documented in duo on Road Shows.
As a leader, Rubin released The Saul Rubin Quartet (2004), Saul Rubin: The ZEBTET (2014), and Zeb’s House (2015). Rubin’s most recent album is 2020’s Zebulon Trio.
In 2009, he founded ZEB’S, a Chelsea loft performance space and recording studio thatoperated as a vital hub for New York’s working jazz community through 2016.
There he produced countless recordings and live performances as well as his beloved long running weekly Jazz Vocalist Series and the NYC Jazz Guitar Festival in 2010, 2012, 2015 and 2019 showcasing some of NYC’s finest guitarists.
He has single-handedly played host to many of the world’s greatest jazz artists. Over the past decade, Rubin has developed a significant European presence, with Paris as a central base of activity. He performs there multiple times each year alongside
venues across France, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, and Romania.
Rubin continues to perform regularly in the U.S. and abroad, with his long running ensemble, The Zebtet, as well as quartets, trios and various groups. He has also collaborated as a sideman with many artists, sustaining a career grounded in trust, consistency, and long-term musical relationships.

Joris Teepe

Een Nederlandse New Yorker met creativiteit als handelsmerk.
In 1992 verliet bassist Joris Teepe zijn thuisland Nederland om zijn droom om jazzmuzikant te worden in New York na te jagen. Hij verhuisde naar een kamer van $300 per maand in Manhattan.
De kamer was zo klein dat de contrabas overdag zijn bed in beslag nam en Joris hem ’s nachts onder de douche moest zetten.
Hij volgde lessen bij Ron Carter en een jaar later nam hij zijn eerste cd op met een band die hij leidde samen met tenorsaxofonist Don Braden. De daarop volgende jaren werkte hij samen met legendes als Benny Golson, Sonny Fortune, Billy Hart en Randy Brecker.
Tot nu toe heeft Joris 23 albums opgenomen als leider of co-leider en ruim 65 als sideman.
Zijn langste periode was bij Rashied Ali (de laatste drummer van John Coltrane), met wie hij vijf albums opnam en tussen 2000 en 2009 de wereld rondtoerde. Onder andere ‘heavy cats’ waarmee Joris optrad zijn Barry Harris, Bobby Watson, Tom Harrell, John Abercrombie, Lee Konitz, Dave Liebman en Mike Clark, en Nederlandse grootheden als
John Engels, Benjamin Herman, Eric Ineke en Rob van Bavel.

Componeren en arrangeren is voor Joris altijd een creatieve uitlaatklep geweest en een motivatie om zoveel albums uit te brengen met onder meer Billy Hart, Don Braden, Rashied Ali, Randy Brecker, Chris Potter, Kevin Hays, Jec ‘Tain’ Watts, Deborah Brown, Louis Hayes, James Williams, Tom Harrell, Tim Armacost, Cyrus Chestnut, Mike Stern, Carl Allen, Gene Jackson en vele anderen. Joris schreef meer dan 100 originele composities, waaronder werken voor Symfonieorkest + Jazzkwartet en Symfonieorkest + Big Band + Koor. Hij leidt zijn Joris Teepe Big Band in New York waarmee hij uitsluitend zijn eigen muziek speelt en neemt zijn eigen repertoire soms mee als gastsolist bij lokale bigbands.
In 2024 was de release van het “Joris Teepe Real Book” met 96 eigen composities, ondersteund door de App van GeniusJamTracks (die je kunt downloaden via de apple store of google play).
Door de jaren heen heeft Teepe zich ontwikkeld tot een ervaren jazzdocent, die lesgaf aan “Queens College, Aaron Copland School of Music” (NY) en “Jazz for Teens” (Newark NJ).
Van 2001 tot 2019 was hij hoofd van de jazzafdeling van het Prins Claus Conservatorium in Groningen, Nederland, waar hij het unieke programma “New York comes to Groningen” introduceerde, waarbij (nu nog steeds) iedere week een docent over komt vanuit New York.
Hij heeft ook lesgegeven aan vele zomerkampen waaronder “Peter Herbolzheimer European Jazz Academy” (Duitsland), “Jazzinty” (Slovenië), “ChoJazz” (Polen), “Orsara Jazz Camp” (Italië), “Albisola Jazz Camp (Italië), “JZ-School Summer Camp” (China), en
“Litchfield Jazz Camp” (Connecticut, VS).
